Studying at university is expensive for many young South Africans. The SASSETA Bursary can lift that burden for students who qualify.
This guide explains who can apply and what the bursary covers and how the application usually works. Read it from start to finish so you do not miss any important step.
What Is the SASSETA Bursary?
SASSETA stands for the Safety and Security Sector Education and Training Authority. It supports skills development in areas linked to justice and policing and public safety One of its main programmes is the Discretionary Grant Unemployed Bursary. It helps unemployed youth pay for studies at public tertiary institutions.
Is the SASSETA Bursary 2027 Open?
At the time of writing SASSETA has not published a confirmed notice for 2027. The last funding window opened on 14 December 2025 and closed on 30 January 2026 at midnight. Earlier years followed a similar pattern with a late January closing date. This means the next call may open in December 2026 and close around January 2027. This is only an expectation. Please check the official SASSETA website for the confirmed dates.
