UNU Junior Fellows Internship 2027 in Tokyo
The United Nations University (UNU) is taking applications for its Junior Fellows Internship at the Office of the Rector in Tokyo. It’s a six-month, paid placement, expected to run from 1 March to 27 August 2027. Applicants from Japan and from overseas are both considered, and the application closes on 1 November 2026.
Who can apply
You need to be a postgraduate student or to have graduated within the last two years, and you must be 32 or younger when you apply. UNU accepts up to five years of related work experience, but not more. Your English has to be native or fluent. If English isn’t your first language and you didn’t study in English, you’ll need a TOEFL, IELTS or TOEIC certificate.
The role is research-heavy, so UNU wants strong writing and analytical skills, good computer skills (Excel helps), and a genuine interest in the UN’s work.
Pay and conditions
The internship is listed as paid, with a monthly stipend, but the notice doesn’t say how much. The application also includes a Funding Form where you show how you’ll cover your costs in Tokyo, so don’t assume the stipend will pay for everything. The notice doesn’t mention housing, travel or insurance support. Work is mostly on-site in Tokyo, with some remote work.
What to send
- A CV in English, two pages at most (the UN P11 form isn’t needed)
- A one-page cover letter in English about why you want the role and what you’d bring
- The UNU Application Form and the UNU Funding Form
- Two recommendation letters
The recommendation letters must be sent by your referees themselves, from their official email addresses. Letters you submit yourself are not accepted, so ask your referees early.
How selection works
UNU first reviews the documents and references. Shortlisted candidates are invited to a phone or Zoom interview, and on the same day they do a timed written assignment of up to two hours.
Deadline
Applications close on 1 November 2026 at 23:59 Japan time. You don’t need to create an account to apply.
