If you want to start in data without a degree, two beginner courses on Coursera come up again and again: the IBM Data Science Professional Certificate and the Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate. They sound similar, but they teach different things. Here’s how they compare, so you can pick the one that fits.
What’s the Difference Between Data Science and Data Analytics?
Data analytics is about collecting and cleaning data, finding patterns and presenting the results Data science goes further into programming and building models, such as machine learning. Google’s course is analytics. IBM’s is closer to data science.

IBM Data Science Professional Certificate
This programme has 12 courses and takes about four months at 10 hours a week, according to Coursera The page lists roughly 178 hours in total. No experience is required, but basic computer skills and school-level maths help, and some of the later courses use a bit more maths.
You learn Python, SQL and R, work with tools like Jupyter and GitHub, and use libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib and Scikit-learn The topics include data cleaning, visualisation, dashboards, machine learning, web scraping and generative AI for data science.
You get a shareable certificate and an IBM badge. The programme carries an ACE recommendation for up to 12 college credits and a recommendation for 6 ECTS credits, but each school decides whether to accept them.
Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate
Google’s programme has nine courses, including a final project and a bonus course on job hunting. Coursera says it takes about six months at 10 hours a week, and the page lists around 152 course hours (and “over 180 hours” elsewhere, so the numbers don’t quite match). It’s for complete beginners, and the page says no experience is needed.
You learn spreadsheets, SQL and Tableau, plus data cleaning, analysis, visualisation and how to present to stakeholders Python and R are mentioned in places, but the FAQ says R isn’t covered in the curriculum, so don’t count on it. You get a Google certificate and a Credly badge, and an ACE recommendation of up to 12 credits.
How Much Do They Cost?
You can enrol for free and start. Google’s programme costs USD 49 a month in the US and Canada after a 7-day free trial, and most learners finish for under USD 300. IBM’s price wasn’t stated on the page, but it’s included with Coursera Plus Financial aid is available on both, though the pages don’t explain the rules. The faster you finish, the less you pay.
Do You Need a Certificate to Get a Job?
It helps, but employers care more about what you can show Add a few projects, like a dashboard or an analysis of a public dataset, to a portfolio or GitHub page A certificate plus projects is much stronger than a certificate alone.
FAQs
Is the IBM data science course free?

How long does it take?
IBM about 4 months and Google about 6 months at 10 hours a week.
Do I need to know programming first?
